Hayes Burger — San Diego
One hell of a burger.
Two shops, one flat top. Barrio Logan since 2020, Normal Heights since 2024.

How we cook it
We do a semi-smash. The Angus chuck hits hot steel and gets pressed — enough to build a dark, crisp edge, not so much that it turns into a chip. The patty stays slightly thicker and juicier than a full smash. American cheese, because it melts right. Lettuce, Roma tomato, grilled onion and a 1000 Island we make here. The sauces are where we have fun: spicy ketchup with fresh habaneros, chopped chile and chile güero on anything you want them on.
Questions we get asked
Why does a burger here cost more than a fast-food one?
Because nothing is made before you order it. Angus chuck, cooked on the flat top when the ticket comes in, and the 1000 Island and habanero ketchup made here. There's no holding drawer and no heat lamp. A double cheeseburger and fries is about $19.50.
How long is the wait?
About 13 minutes once you order, because everything is cooked to order. Longer on Friday and Saturday nights. Order ahead at hayesburger.com and it'll be ready when you walk in.
Is there anything besides burgers?
Grilled cheese, Jimi Fries and Spicy Jimi, regular fries, chile güero and chopped chile on anything, and a kids' menu with a cheeseburger, hamburger or grilled cheese. Chocolate chip cookies at the register. The menu is short on purpose — we'd rather do a few things properly.
Do you have beer?
At Barrio Logan, yes — Modelo, Tierra Madre, a rotating short list of local IPAs, and wine including rosé, a red, and a white. No alcohol at the Adams Ave shop in Normal Heights.
Is there seating, or is it takeout only?
Barrio Logan has a sidewalk patio out front — picnic tables under umbrellas — plus counter seating inside. Normal Heights has tables inside and seating outside on Adams.
Do you have a kids' menu?
Yes — kids' cheeseburger, hamburger or grilled cheese, plus Martinelli's. Normal Heights opens at noon on weekends, which is the easier one with a stroller.
